Ikebana is the fine art of Japanese floral design, which originated over 550 years ago in Kyoto when the Ikenobo family used flowers for Buddhist offerings. Rather than simply placing flowers in a vase, the family strove to create the most beautiful, eye-catching arrangements. Passing their knowledge down from generation to generation, the Ikenobos have established ikebana as not only an art form but also a way of life, called kado. Today the family continues its ikebana tradition—Sen’ei Ikenobo is the 45th-generation ikebana master. Ikebana is practiced all over the world and continues to evolve with the introduction of new materials and new styles.

Ikenobo’s Arranging Styles
Rikka: A formal style originating from 15th-century tatehana, formalized in the 17th century. Rikka expresses landscape beauty through contrasting materials. Includes traditional (shofutai) and modern (shim-putai) variations.
Shoka: Evolved from 18th-century simpler arrangements, formalized in the 19th century. Shoka uses three main branches (shin, soe, tai) to represent plant essence and life’s renewal. Emphasizes the “mizugiwa” (water’s edge) and the life within the plant.
Free Style: A contemporary style allowing personal expression. Free style encompasses naturalistic and design-oriented approaches.Focuses on innovative use of plant materials to convey mood and effect.
